Guatemala Guatemala is part of the International Mission Board's MAC (or Middle America and Caribbean) world region. Guatemala, a country the size of Tennessee with 23 distinct languages and 52 dialects, has 13 million people, most of whom don’t know Christ. We have an established relationship with Larry and Sarah Plyler, who just happen to be the parents of HSBC member Dr. Michael Plyler. They are the the strategists of the IMB coordinated Operation Go. Operation GO’s purpose is to quickly spread the good news of Jesus Christ to every family in Guatemala. This is accomplished through a combination of prayer-walking, scripture distribution and evangelistic visits. To learn more about the MAC region, and in particular Guatemala, visit the MAC website at www.macregion.org and follow the Map Search on that site. We have had the privilege of hosting Larry and Sarah in our Mission House this past year (2008-09). They returned to Guatemala in March 2009. They live and serve in Guatemala City and the surrounding areas. A mission trip which was planned to Guatemala mid-summer 2009 was canceled. Tentative plans are in the works to reschedule this trip for summer 2010. To express an interest in this 2010 trip e-mail us at: hsbcmissions@hotspringsbaptist.org. Peru Larry and Joy Johnson were called to full time mission service in 1984 and were appointed missionaries by the International Mission Board to serve in Peru. Larry and Joy retired from the IMB in 2000. But God did not withdraw their calling to missions. And they could not leave Cajamarca, Peru and settle for retirement in Texas. They established Villa Milagro Ministries in 1999 and continue to serve the Lord in Peru as God gives them time and health to do so. HSBC provides significant monetary and volunteer support to the Villa Milagro Ministries. Villa Milagro is involved in numerous ministries to the people of Peru, including orphans, education, church planting and evangelism, farming, well drilling, and medical needs. To learn more about this exciting ministry visit the website: www.villamilagro.net. Click here for a photo gallery of the Feb. 2008 HSBC Amazon Medical Mission Trip.
Uganda Uganda has been part of the IMB CESA (Central, Eastern, and Southern Africa) world region. It will soon be realigned to the new demarcation of Equatorial Africa. Misti and Anthony Shelton are IMB missionaries in Uganda. Misti is the daughter of Lynn and Sue McGee and the Shelton's currently live in Kampala. Kampala is the capital of Uganda and has a population of approximately 2-3 million people. Sixty-six percent of the people claim to be Christian; this includes Catholics and Anglicans. However, many are Christians in name only. There are large segments of Muslims, Hindus and Bahais who give evidence of a non-Christian influence here. African traditional religion also tends to lay right below the surface of many believers. Ancestor worship, witchdoctors and fetishes can be seen in and around the city. There are approximately 25 Baptist churches in the Baptist Union of Uganda. HSBC supports the work in and around Kampala by providing funding, which when combined with contributions from a few other US churches, is used to purchase land to build additional churches. Title to the land and churches are held by the Baptist Union of Uganda. Just this year we have begun providing scholarships to Uganda nationals to attend the IMB Seminary in Jinga. These two HSBC support efforts are complimentary since they ultimately result in new churches and seminary-trained nationals to pastor them. Misti and Anthony will be moving to Jinga in January when Anthony will become a teacher at the Seminary. You may keep up with the Shelton's by visiting their blog at: http://sheltonsinuganda.blogspot.com/.
